On Saturday February 27, 2010, Redding Electric Utility (REU) hosted the 2010 Redding Regional Science Bowl at Simpson University. Twenty-six student teams from Shasta, Trinity, Siskiyou, Butte and Lassen counties high schools competed in this intense academic competition. Local high school students demonstrated their expertise in astronomy, biology, chemistry, math, physics and general science in the question-and-answer game format tournament.
Excitement and anticipation filled the air as Patrick Keener, REU’s Energy Services Manager, kicked off the opening ceremony in Simpson University’s Heritage Student Life Center. Teams were then directed to classrooms to compete in this fast-paced display of their academic knowledge. After several rounds, two teams remained in the competition: Shasta High School Team #1 and U-Prep High School Team #1. The Shasta High School team won the final round and first place title. The Shasta team will now proceed to Washington, D.C., to participate in the National Science Bowl Competition, scheduled April 29 - May 4, 2010. We congratulate Shasta High School’s Science Bowl team and wish them the best of luck in the National Competition!
This academic competition is sponsored nationally by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and hosted locally by REU. In 1991, as a national initiative, the DOE developed the National Science Bowl to encourage high school students from across the nation to excel in math and science and to pursue careers in those fields. The event provides the students and the educators who have prepared them a forum for national recognition for achieving educational excellence in the sciences. This year marked the 16th anniversary of the Redding Regional Science Bowl.
Contributing sponsors of the Redding Regional Science Bowl include: Redding Electric Utility, City of Shasta Lake, Lassen Municipal Utility District, Ice Energy, Halcyon Solar Construction, Nichols Melburg & Rosetto Architects, PowerHouse Solar, Simpson University, Skyway Machine Inc., Trinity Public Utility District, Wallner Plumbing, Wing Solar & Wood Energy, Western Area Power Administration and the U.S. Department of Energy. The City of Redding wishes to express our appreciation to all the participants and volunteers - without the support of the many volunteers who provide behind-the-scenes assistance, the Redding Regional Science Bowl would not be possible.
