The Winning Team - Foothill High School
Coach Matt Fowler, Coulter Knapp, Nick Rossow, Zane Silver, Brett Hodge, Nick Cerami

On Saturday March 7, 2009, Redding Electric Utility (REU) hosted the 2009 Redding Regional Science Bowl at Simpson University. 25 student teams from 11 north state high schools competed in this intense academic competition. Local high school students demonstrated their expertise in astronomy, biology, chemistry, math, physics and general science in the question-and-answer game format tournament.

Excitement and anticipation filled the air as Patrick Keener, REU’s Energy Services Manager, kicked off the opening ceremony in Simpson University’s Heritage Life Center. Teams were then directed to classrooms to compete in this fast-paced display of their academic knowledge. After several rounds, three teams remained in the competition: Foothill High School Team #2, Shasta High School Team #1, and Shasta High School Team #2. The Foothill High School team won the final round and first place title. The Foothill team will now proceed to Washington, D.C., to participate in the National Science Bowl Competition, scheduled April 30 - May 5, 2009. We congratulate Foothill High School’s Science Bowl team and wish them the best of luck in the National Competition!

This academic competition is sponsored nationally by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and hosted locally by REU. In 1991, as a national initiative, the DOE developed the National Science Bowl to encourage high school students from across the nation to excel in math and science and to pursue careers in those fields. The event provides the students and the educators who have prepared them a forum for national recognition for achieving educational excellence in the sciences. This year marked the 16th anniversary of the Redding Regional Science Bowl.

Contributing sponsors of the Regional Science Bowl include: Redding Electric Utility, Simpson University, City of Shasta Lake, CH2M Hill, Coca-Cola, Skyway Machine Inc., Wallner Plumbing, Western Area Power Administration, Trinity Public Utility District and U.S. Department of Energy. The City of Redding and participating schools wish to express our appreciation of their generous contributions and participation - without their support, and the support of the many volunteers who provide behind-the-scenes assistance, the Regional Science Bowl would not be possible.
