What is Hydro Electricity?
Hydro Power is currently the world’s largest renewable source of electricity, accounting for some 6% of the worldwide energy supply and about 15% of the world’s electricity. Hydroelectric power plants convert the kinetic energy contained in falling water into electricity. Dams store water for usage throughout the year. The reservoirs behind the dams can serve as recreational lakes, sources of drinking water, and can increase downstream flows for fish and wildlife.

Does REU purchase or produce Hydro Electricity?
REU has a long-term contract to purchase a significant portion of Redding's energy needs from power generated by the Federal dams around Northern California such as Shasta, Trinity, and Folsom, which make up the Central Valley Project. Redding receives 7% of the electricity output from these facilities along with 84 other customers, and has been a partner advocating enhancement projects to increase the hydro generation efficiency along with the Western Area Power Administration. Redding also owns and operates a small hydro generating plant at the base of Whiskeytown Dam near the City of Redding.
