REDDING ELECTRIC UTILITY (REU) PARTICIPATES IN
GOVERNOR’S INAUGURAL EVENT AT STATE CAPITOL

Redding Electric Utility (REU), the City of Redding’s locally-owned and controlled municipal utility, was invited by the California Energy Commission (CEC) to participate in the Governor’s “Leading the Green Dream” Inaugural Celebration on the south steps of the State Capitol earlier this month. REU was the only public electric utility in the State of California to participate in the event.

The CEC selected REU as the State’s only municipal utility to participate in the event as a direct result of REU’s proactive energy conservation, energy efficiency and renewable energy education program for the community and local school children. Another factor was REU’s growing commitment to the environment through its support of renewable energy. REU recently entered into a long-term contract for approximately 25 megawatts of wind power, sponsored a 14 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) installation at a new Redding Fire Station, awarded Habitat for Humanity REU’s first Excellence in Green Building Award, and integrated both Thermal Energy Storage (TES) and solar PV into the community’s new state-of-the-art library building set to open very soon.

The Governor, who was recovering from a broken femur sustained in a skiing accident, was unable to attend his “Green Dream” celebration but was represented by his wife, Maria Shriver, the couple’s two sons and the Governor’s mother-in-law Eunice Kennedy Shriver. REU’s Residential Account Manager, Adrian Mallery represented REU at the event and spent the day interacting with children and adults about the benefits of energy efficiency and conservation and its relationship to the “Green Dream”.

California’s First Lady Ms. Shriver, her family and staff stopped by the CEC/REU booth for a live demonstration comparing the energy consumed by incandescent lights vs. compact fluorescent lamps, and saw first hand the benefits of solar energy through the CEC’s solar powered miniature Ferris Wheel.

As a result of REU’s participation in this event, REU was asked to participate in a renewable energy education workshop focused on sharing information among the State’s utilities on how to best deliver the energy conservation, efficiency and renewable energy message to the State’s 4th and 5th grade students. The workshop resulted in the formation of a CEC led Energy Education Committee and REU was again asked to participate on the Committee. REU is very proud to have been chosen to represent the State’s 36 publicly-owned electric utilities at the Governor’s “Leading the Green Dream” Celebration and will continue to support the CEC’s education goals.
