Power Production
A majority of REU's energy comes from hydro plants located in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Shasta Dam is one of our major contributors.

The Redding Power Plant is the home of more than 135 megawatts of installed generating capacity. That's enough capacity to supply over 50% of REU's energy needs on the hottest summer day, and 100% of our customer's needs throughout most of the rest of the year. Five units of varying sizes and types provide both base energy and short-term "peak" power. They are all fueled by clean burning natural gas.

REU also owns and operates a small hydro plant at Whiskeytown dam. It provides 3.5 megawatts of environmentally responsible energy around the clock.

In conjunction with the City of Santa Clara and the Modesto Irrigation District, REU is part owner of the San Juan generating station in northwestern New Mexico. REU has an exchange agreement with another utility that returns an equal amount of energy generated by San Juan to us in the hot summer months.

REU owns or has usage rights to transmission lines that run the length of California in order to import or export power for its needs.
