GETTING CONNECTED TO THE CITY OF REDDING ELECTRIC SYSTEM

Are you looking to get your facility connected to the City of Redding electric distribution system? If yes, you have found the correct location for the information you need. It's not as difficult as it might seem. First, are you building a new home in an established residential subdivision where all facilities are underground (no overhead wires on poles)? If yes, go to "A" below. Are you building a new home in an area where electric wires are existing on poles? Then go to "B" below. If you are building a multi-residential building or project, a commercial/industrial building or project, or a new subdivision of any type, go to "B" below.

NEW SERVICES – Existing Underground Residential Subdivision Only

A. The subdivision you are building in was designed so that all you have to do is complete and submit the appropriate (forms) then install conduit and secondary/service conductors. These service facilities will normally be installed from an existing City of Redding Electric splice box (located at a property line near the street) to your electrical panel (main switch). Section five of the Public Works Construction Standards gives complete details on how to install the service. If you need additional advice you may call the Electric Utility Distribution Planner for your area (see map) or call the Electric Utility System Inspector. After all facilities have been installed, fees paid, and the meter panel inspected and approved by the City of Redding Building Division, the service will be ready to be energized. A service application must be completed and approved by the City of Redding Customer Service Division. After approval of your service application, a meter will be installed and the power turned on. Please note: Electric Utility Inspection requirement below.

NEW SERVICE – Residential, Commercial/Industrial/Multi-Family – Projects and New Subdivisions

B. Please contact the Electric Utility Distribution Planner for the area of the City you are building in (see map). It is highly desirable that you complete and submit the appropriate (forms) and contact the Planner during the initial stage of your design process. The Distribution Planner will need to know the following information. Please have it available or provide it soon after making contact.

  1. Electric service main switch size?
  2. Estimated maximum demand load?
  3. Largest motor's horsepower rating?
  4. Desired voltage (120/240, 120/208, or 277/480)? The Distribution Planner will confirm availability of the voltage at your project's location.
  5. Is service to be single phase or three phase? The availability will also be confirmed by the Distribution Planner.
  6. Location of project?
  7. Plot plan showing property lines, landscape features and building outline(s).

       8.    If a City of Redding transformer is to be located within 35 feet of

a building, the construction material used in and on the building.

The Distribution Planner, working with you or your design team, will prepare an Electric Construction design drawing. The Construction Drawing will indicate all required easements, conduits, vaults, boxes, and secondary conductors to be supplied and/or installed by you or your contractor to provide electric service to your project. You will also receive all necessary drawings from the Public Works Construction Standards, pertaining to the installation of electric facilities, as a part of the Construction Drawing. There will be no charge for the initial designing of the Electric Construction Drawing, however in most cases there will be other costs to establish service to your project. After the Distribution Planner has completed the design for your project, you will be sent a confirmation letter and possibly an invoice for any excess footage of primary cables needed for your project. Any costs associated with relocating existing electric facilities, as a result of your project, will also be included in the invoice. The confirmation letter must be returned, any fees must be paid in full and all required easements must be recorded prior to the Electric Utility's Field Operations staff scheduling your project into their workflow. After all facilities have been installed and all fees paid and the meter panel inspected and approved by the City of Redding Building Division the service will be ready to be energized. A service application must be completed and approved by the City of Redding Customer Service Division. After approval of your service application, a meter will be installed and the power turned on. Please note; Electric Utility Inspection requirement below.

ELECTRIC UTILITY INSPECTIONS
Inspection Requirements - All conduits and substructures installed in or below the ground for Electric Utility use must be inspected prior to backfilling. Failure to obtain an inspection will require the installer to expose any or all of the buried facilities for an inspection. Please schedule an inspection at least 48 hours in advance by calling the Electric Utility System Inspector at 224-4390.
